Lions Fall to W&J; Defeat Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team split two away matches against Washington & Jefferson and Grove City Saturday. They fell in game one to W&J 10-8 and came back with a win in game two 12-6 over Grove City.

Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) led the Lion (5-15) offense in both games, scoring half of their goals in each game to total 10 on the day. In their win, Horn notched one in the first and second quarter followed by two in the third and fourth.

Clare Jefferys (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) added three goals, while Mary Therese Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell), Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Rayni Modecki (Carnegie, PA/Chartiers Valley) added one a piece. Modecki's was the first of her collegiate career.

Behrend and the Wolverines (6-13) were tied at two at the end of the first before the Lions took a 4-3 lead at the half. With a 7-5 advantage going into the final frame, Behrend outscored Grove City 5-1 and captured a well-deserved victory.

In the Lions' morning matchup with the Presidents (12-4), a late comeback by W&J pushed them to victory.

Behrend found themselves with a 5-1 lead after the first half of play. The second half was taken by the Presidents. Five straight goals by W&J tied the game at 6-all. The two teams then traded goals and were in an 8-all tie with 4:46 remaining.

The Presents added a goal with 2:03 left and then again at the 1:47 mark. The Lions were unable to keep up the fight and lost in a nail-biter.

Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) was outstanding in net once again. She made nine saves in game one and followed that with 11 in the game two win.

Behrend has a rematch with both of these teams tomorrow at home. They play Grove City at 11 a.m. and then W&J at 3 p.m. and will recognize the seniors.
