Women's Water Polo Splits on Senior Day

EIRE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team split the second half of their home and home series with Grove City 12-10 and Washington & Jefferson 5-1 Sunday.

The win over the Wolverines (6-14) secured the No. 4 seed for the upcoming Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships.

Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) scored seven goals in the contest while Clare Jefferys (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) and Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) each added two.

The Lions (6-16) got out to an early lead. They went up 3-0 within the first six minutes of the game, but Grove City clawed their way back and tied it at 3-all.

Behrend then fell behind 6-5 with 1:34 left in the second half until Brittney Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) started a 5-0 run right before the half ended.

Four straight goals to open the third quarter gave the Lions a comfortable four-goal lead they were able to hold on to. Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) made a remarkable 11 saves in net to seal the second consecutive victory over the Wolverines this weekend.

Game two against the Presidents (13-5) was senior day for Behrend. Lauren Rosato (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) and Mary Therese Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) were honored before the game.

The game itself did not play into the Lions' favor however. Four goals by W&J in the first quarter gave them a lead they did not give up. The Lions got one back from Horn 1:45 into the second quarter, but it was all they would get.

The Presidents added on more goal with just over two minutes left in the third quarter and the game was goalless from that point forward.

Behrend travels to New London, CT on April 16 to compete in the CWPA DIII Championships. Game times are TBD.
