Women's Water Polo, Stegmann, Causgrove All Set Records
The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team finished fourth at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships Sunday morning after falling to Carthage 14-11, their highest finish in program history.
NEW LONDON, Ct. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team finished fourth at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships Sunday morning after falling to Carthage 14-11, their highest finish in program history.
During the game, Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) broke the all-time saves record for the Lions, finishing with 593.
Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) broke the single-season record with 28 this season, while Mary Therese Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) set the program record for most assists in a career with 78.
Clare Jefferys (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) was named Rookie of the Tournament after scoring 11 goals during the championships.
Jefferys and Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) continued their strong offensive performance during the finals game of the championships for the Lions (7-16).
Horn scored four goals and Jefferys tallied another three. Causgrove recorded her first goals of the weekend, notching three in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Reds (15-4) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Behrend was able to get back in the game and force a 3-2 contest after the first quarter.
Horn tallied the first goal of the second to tie the game at 3-all. From there, Carthage scored three straight goals and the half ended with the Lions down 6-4.
The two teams went back and forth for the entire second half. The Reds outscored the Lions 8-7 and Behrend fell by three, but took home their best finish ever.
