Women's Water Polo Defeats Caltech for First Win of Season

PASADENA, Ca. - The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team defeated Caltech Tuesday, 21-14, to pick up their first win of the season.

After trailing the Beavers (0-5) 5-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Lions (1-6) went on to outscore Caltech 18-9 for the remainder of the game.

Clare Jeffreys (Erie, PA/Villia Maria Academy) and Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) got Behrend on the board in the first quarter. Jeffreys scored in the first minute of the game and added another with just one minute remaining in the quarter.

The Lions then added five goals in the second quarter compared to the Beaver's four to get right back into the game. Horn netted her second goal of the game at the 7:06 mark to make it a 6-4 game. Caltech responded with two straight, but Behrend fired back with three of their own, one each from Allison McClure (Loveland, OH/Milford), Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills), and Jenessa Islas-Parker (Palatine, IL/Frema).

Allie Schneider (Erie, PA/McDowell) finished off the the first half scoring with her first goal of the game at the 1:42 mark and making the score 9-8.

After the Lions and Beavers traded goals to begin the second half, Behrend took their first lead of the game with 59 seconds remaining in the third thanks to a goal from Horn, making it 12-11.

The Lions then exploded for eight goals in the final quarter to take a commanding lead over Caltech. Colleen Abanico (Mitilani, O'ahi, HI/Mitilani), and Wood each scored two while Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area), Schneider, and Islas-Parker added one apiece.

Jeffreys and Horn each finished the game with five goals while each only taking six shots. Horn also added four steals and an assist. 

Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Islas-Parker each tallied three assists in the game.

Hollyrae Hanson (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) made eight saves in net for the Lions.
