Lions Compete in Day Two of Regional Action

NEW LONDON, Ct. - The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team competed in the second day of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Regional Tournament Saturday.

The Lions (2-11), fell to Carthage 15-6 in game one. The Lady Reds never trailed in the game after striking first just 39 seconds in. They added two more to take an early 3-1 lead after the first eight minutes of action. Clare Jeffreys (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) scored the lone first quarter goal.

Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) scored the first goal of the second quarter to make it a 3-2 game. Carthage, however, continued their steady offensive play by adding three straight goals before the half, making it a 6-2 game.

The Lady Reds put together a huge third quarter by outscoring Behrend 7-3 to take an eight-goal advantage into the final quarter. Jenessa Islas-Parker (Palatine, IL/Frema) scored the lone goal in the final eight minutes of the game as the Lions were unable to overcome the commanding Carthage lead.

Pinter finished the game with two goals and three steals and Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) added two of her own while drawing five ejections. Jeffreys added two assists.

The Lions then took on Connecticut College in game two, falling to the Camels 10-5.

Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) and Horn each tallied two goals to lead the offense with Pinter adding one.

After being tied 2-all to start the second quarter, Conn. College took a slight 4-3 lead into halftime. They then exploded for four-straight to start the third quarter to take an 8-3 lead.

Behrend scored the next two goals to close out the quarter, but were held there for the remained of the game. The Camels added one more goal in the fourth to take the final four-goal lead.

Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Southerton Area) made 14 saves throughout the day.

The Lions will take on Macalester tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the weekend.
