Lions Battle Past Grove City

Lions Battle Past Grove City

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team defeated Grove City Friday evening, 8-5.

The Wolverines (2-10) scored the first goal of the game, but the Lions (3-12) responded just 25 seconds later after Clare Jefferys (Villa Maria Academy) found open space through the middle to score, tying the game at 1-all to finish the first quarter.

Grove City then opened the second quarter with another goal to take the lead again. Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) responded with a breakaway goal a few minutes later to knot the game back up. Less than a minute later, Jefferys found open space and scored to give the Lions their first lead of the game.

At the 2:49 mark of the second, Jefferys added another to give her team the two-goal lead. Behrend closed out the second half with their fourth straight goal, courtesy of Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.

The Wolverines attempted to trim the Lions lead by scoring the first goal of the second half, but Jenessa Islas-Parker (Palatine, IL/Frema) found the back of the net to help Behrend jump back out to a three-goal lead. Grove City added two more over the remainder of the game, but it wasn't enough.

Jefferys netted her fourth goal of the game while Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) added one to close out the game.

Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Southerton Area) had a stellar game in net for the Lions, making ten saves on the night.

Behrend will be back in action tomorrow against W&J at the Junker Center Pool at 11 a.m. They will then travel to Grove City for a 7 p.m. game tomorrow evening.
