Women's Water Polo Goes Even on Day Two of CWPA Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team split a pair of games on day two of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships, opening the day with a win over Connecticut then dropping game two to Washington & Jefferson.

Final Scores: Penn State Behrend 19, Connecticut 15
Washington and Jefferson 12, Penn State Behrend 11

Game One:

* Marley Persch (Hudsonville, MI/Hudsonville) led the Lions in scoring, netting five including a two-goal second period
* Emily McNaughton (Wexford, PA/Pine-Richland) potted four with three coming in the third frame
* Behrend went down early, trailing 5-2 after the first quarter of play
* An eight-goal second period gave the Lions the lead heading into the second half (10-8)
* Six more tallies in the third gave Behrend a 16-11 cushion and closed out the fourth with their first win on the weekend
* Chloe Dodgen (Riverside, CA/Hillcrest) made eight saves in the win

Game Two:

* The largest lead the game saw was a two-goal advantage
* Brooklynn Mocny (Sunnyvale, CA/Homestead) knotted the game at 10-10 to open the final frame and would take the lead with 4:26 remaining with Angela Laier (Lansing, MI/Holt) finding the scoresheet for her second goal of the day
* Washington & Jefferson potted the equalizer and with just two seconds remaining would find the back of the net for the game winner, downing the Lions at the horn for the 12-11 victory
* Laier, Persch, Mocny, Samantha Darrell (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) and Shannon Young (Roseville, CA/Roseville) each had two goals in the loss
* Sarah Mancebo (Tulare, CA/Mission Oak) added a tally in the first quarter as time was expiring

* Behrend will play the loser of Grove City and Carthage to determine seventh place in the CWPA Division III Tournament tomorrow at 9 a.m.
