Behrend Softball Claims Top ECAC South All-Star Team Honors

The Penn State Behrend softball team had another tremendous season, claiming the AMCC regular season title with a stellar 18-0 record. It was followed by a perfect 3-0 performance en route to the 2009 AMCC Conference Tournament championship and after advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, honors keep rolling in for the blue and white after a 33-8 season.

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) just announced the 2009 Division III South Softball All-Star team. Behrend's senior standout Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) was selected as the Pitcher of the Year, while freshman counterpart Amy Greene (Erie/Strong Vincent) was tabbed the Rookie of the Year. Head coach Stacy Pondo was also named the Coach of the Year after being named the AMCC Co-Coach of the Year last week.

This past season Koman racked up a 16-2 record with 111 strike-outs in 117 innings against only 26 walks. She also posted a miniscule 1.38 ERA. Greene, the AMCC Newcomer of the Year, batted .409 with six home runs and 30 RBIs.

Senior Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) was a first team member at second base nearly a week after her and Koman were named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region teams. Senior outfielder Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) was on the second team.  Kaschauer batted .398 with three homeruns, nine doubles and 28 RBIs, while Whitby hit .385 with 17 RBIs and scored 32 runs.

The Behrend senior class created an incredible four year run for the blue and white while earning an amazing 129-48 overall record and a 60-12 mark against AMCC opponents.
