Behrend's Greene and Wieser Earn AMCC Softball Weekly Honors

The Behrend Lions softball team had two players recognized by the AMCC after capturing the AMCC regular season championship this past week.

Freshman catcher Amy Greene (Erie/Strong Vincent) was named AMCC Softball Player of the Week, and sophomore pitcher Maddie Wieser (Erie/Collegiate Academy) was named AMCC Softball Pitcher of the Week for April 27.

Greene was deadly at the plate going 14-for-17 (.823) and helping the Behrend Lions to a 4-0 week to clinch the league's regular season title.  Greene racked up 17 RBI and 12 runs scored by smashing six doubles and three homeruns, including a grand slam against Hilbert.  For the season Greene is hitting .451 and leads the team in doubles (15), home runs (6), and total bases (72).

Wieser posted two big wins for the Behrend Lions in conference play to help her team clinch the regular season title and the top seed in the AMCC tournament.  Against Hilbert on April 23, Wieser pitched four innings giving up one run and striking out three.  She has a 3-1 record on the season with a 2.73 ERA in 25.2 innings of work.  Wieser is also a .295 hitter for the blue and white who has homered three times and driven in 21 runs.

The Penn State Behrend Lions (29-5) will host the 2009 AMCC Softball Championships this weekend (May 1-3) at the Behrend Softball field.  Tournament games in the six-team, double-elimination championship tournament will begin Friday at 10:00 a.m.  The AMCC Champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Behrend is the defending champion and has won the AMCC title in 1999, 2006, and 2008.
