Women's Volleyball Splits on Day One of Brockport Tournament

BROCKPORT, NY – The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team opened up the season with a 3-1 win over Houghton and dropped a 3-0 decision to the hosts of the Brockport Invitational held on Friday night.

The Lions (1-2) edged the Highlanders (1-2) in four sets, winning 27-25, 25-21, 20-25, and 25-19. Meredith Snyder (Parker, PA/Allegheny Clarion Valley) led with 15 kills and Lindsay Bean (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) contributed 10 kills to aid in the team's 57 kills in the match.

Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 21 digs. Behrend also posted 90 digs led by Allania Banta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) with 24.

In the first set, the Lions were tied four times before taking the game with three straight kills; one by Bean, another by Amanda Henry (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) and the final point was by Snyder.  

Snyder helped Behrend take set two with three of the final four kills of the game for a 25-21 win. Houghton was able to win the third set for the come-back attempt. Behrend jumped out to a 20-12 lead and got the first victory of the season at 25-19.

Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) handed out 42 assists and recorded 10 digs for the double-double. Saunders also led in assists in the first match with 25.

Brockport defeated the Lions in the first match, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-16. Bean paced Behrend with 10 kills and Courtney Hopson (Erie, PA/McDowell) posted 18 digs to combine for 38 digs for the day. Hopson also added four aces vs. the Highlanders.

The Lions returns to action tomorrow against Gordon and Ithaca. Matches begin at 11 a.m.
