Behrend Leads Cabrini at the AMCC Championships

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's swimming and diving team remains in first place out of six teams after day three of the 2017 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships held in the Junker Pool on Friday.

The Lions lead Cabrini 410.5-326.5 after 26 events and three days of competition. Alfred State is in third with 221 total points, while Franciscan is fourth (204), Penn State Altoona is fifth (199) and Pitt-Bradford is sixth (115).

Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) was a two-time winner on day three for Behrend. She led a 1-3-5 finish in the 100 backstroke. She brought home the gold with a time of 1:00.75. Abigail Witmer (Herndon, PA/Herndon) picked up third overall in 1:02.21 and Allie Schneider (Erie, PA/McDowell) was fifth (1:03.66).

The 200 medley relay team of Horn, Kristin Owens (Erie, PA/McDowell), Claire Mallick (Pittsburgh, PA/Woodland Hills) and Jessica Wyckoff (Elma, NY/Iroquois) posted a time of 1:54.96 for first place.

Anna Rose Watterson (Baldwin, PA/Seton-La Salle), who was seeded second after the preliminaries in the 400 IM heat by 11 seconds, pulled out a come-from-behind win with a time of 5:00.83. The win marks her second straight 400 IM title, beating her winning time from last year by 15 seconds.

Gwendolyn Lowery (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) came up short of repeating as the 100 butterfly champions. The junior touched the wall in 1:01.30 for second place and .36 seconds faster than her time from a year ago. Witmer came in third place.

In the 200 freestyle, Wyckoff led the Lions with a third-place finish with a time of 2:00.48 while Lowery placed fourth in 2:01.05.

Owens was the top finisher for Behrend in the 100 breaststroke, claiming runner up with a time of 1:13.20, nearly a second faster than her prelim time (1:14.17).

The Lions return to action tomorrow for the final day of the AMCC Championships. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 6 p.m.
