Baseball Sweeps Hilbert

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team swept a doubleheader in conference play Tuesday afternoon against Hilbert. The Lions (14-6, 5-3 AMCC) offense was clicking on all cylinders throughout the day taking game one by a score of 6-3 and then winning game two, 17-4.

David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-La Salle) led the Behrend offense in game one going 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI's and two runs scored. Boehme opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double down the left field line. He also added an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) went 3-for-3 including an RBI single in the second following Boehme's double. After scoring the first two runs of the game, Tommy Kocur (Erie, PA/McDowell) successfully converted a squeeze play with a sacrifice bunt that scored Boehme from third base.

The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early three-run lead and added three more in the bottom of the fourth after Hilbert (4-17, 1-5 AMCC) tied the game with three runs in the top half of the fourth.

Tylor Williams (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) threw five innings on the hill giving up three earned runs while punching out five. He picked up the victory while Connor Semple (Washington, PA/McGuffey) earned his second save of the season with two shutout innings of relief.

Behrend belted 21 hits in game two and put up 17 runs in the first five innings. Six different Lions had multi-hit games including John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) who was 4-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored.

Nathan Junk (Cabot, PA/Knoch) had three hits while Brian Bohman, (Erie, PA/McDowell) Nathan Noe, (Albion, PA/Northwestern) Matt Wolczko (Apollo, PA/Kiski) and Taylor Overby (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) all had two hits apiece. Alex Margraf (Erie, PA/McDowell) added three RBI's going 1-for-1 from the plate with a walk and a pair of sacrifice flies.

Boehme earned his second win of the season in his first career start giving up one run in three innings pitched. Zach Murray (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) tossed two shutout innings in his first career appearance from the bump with two strikeouts while Jordan Weinzierl (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) also chipped in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Lions are now on a three-game winning streak heading into a conference doubleheader on Thursday against Pitt-Bradford. The first game will start at 1 p.m.
