Men's Tennis Defeats Alfred

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team picked up their second win of the fall season with a 6-3 victory over Alfred in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lions (2-1) held a 2-1 lead in the match after doubles competition. Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) and Mike Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) defeated Connor David and Kevin Volz, 8-3 at the No. 1 spot. After surrendering No. 2 doubles to the Saxons, Chris Heintz (Fairview, PA/Fairview) and Michael Funera (Hermitage, PA/Hickory) edged Sean Benoit and Tristan Delcon Gill in a tiebreaker (8-6, 9-8).

Apgar took David to three sets in No. 1 singles to earn his second victory of the day by a 4-6, 6-2, 13-11 score. Russell posted a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Volz at No. 2 singles, helping Behrend inch closer to victory.

Funera and Brett Palmer (North East, PA/North East) secured the win at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Funera was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Benoit and Palmer got his first win of the day with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 decision over Delcon Gill.

The Lions return to action on Friday, September 25 against Mt. Union. Match begins at 3:30 p.m.
