Men's Tennis Secures No. 2 Seed for AMCC Semifinals

ERIE, Pa. –  The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team won their fifth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) match, defeating Penn State Altoona 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at Westwood Racquet Club.

The Lions (10-8, 5-1 AMCC) clinched the No. 2 seed in the conference for the upcoming playoffs next weekend. Behrend had five players won twice on the day, including Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) at No. 1 doubles and singles.

He tallied a 6-2, 6-1 win over Conner Saltzer and also teamed up with Mike Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) for an 8-5 decision in doubles action. Russell, playing at No. 2 singles, was a 6-1, 6-2 winner against Carlos Cevallos.

Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) and Jeremy Burnheimer (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) posted an 8-2 decision at No. 2 doubles, while Mike Funera (Hermitage, PA/Hickory) and Nick Kapty (Monongahela, PA/Ringgold) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory.

McFarland then registered a close 7-5, 6-3 win vs. John D'Arcy at No. 3 singles for his second victory of the day. Competing at No. 4 singles, Funera tallied a 6-4, 6-4 decision, while Burnheimer posted a three-set tiebreaker win at No. 5 singles (2-6, 6-3, 10-2).

Brett Palmer (North East, PA/North East) won easily at No. 6 singles, posting a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Tony Vergari.

The Lions will face the No. 3 seed in the AMCC semifinals on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Westwood Racquet Club.
