Defense Lifts Hilbert Past Women's Basketball

HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert women's basketball team had three players in double figures to defeat Penn State Behrend 68-48 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Wednesday night.

Kelsi Ebert led with 20 points to help the Hawks (11-13, 8-9 AMCC) snap a six-game losing streak to the Lions (9-15, 8-9 AMCC) and stay alive for the upcoming AMCC playoffs. Taylor Corts came off the bench to add 15 points, while Shannon Rogers had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) scored 14 points and Heidi Langhorst (Corapolis, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) registered 10 points for Behrend.

Hilbert shot 48.2 percent from the floor for the game and outscored the Lions in every quarter, including a 17-6 first quarter, to make a difference in the key conference matchup.

Both teams took their time to get going in the first period with a combined six points scored in the first five minutes. Langhorst scored four straight points to give the Lions a 6-4 lead, but the Hawks went on a 13-0 run over the next 3:46 to take a commanding 17-6 advantage.

Behrend cut the double-digit lead to nine points late in the second quarter at 27-18, however could not recover from the damage in the first.

Hilbert had its best quarter in the third with 19 points compared to the Lions 16. The Hawks also held Behrend to a season low in the scoring column.

Katie Chess (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds and Fontaine Glenn (West Sunbury, PA/Moniteau) tallied six points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Lions return to action on Saturday for senior day against Penn State Altoona. Game time is 1 p.m.
