Myers Throws Shutout in Split with Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team was on the road Friday afternoon for some Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action, beating Pitt-Bradford 7-0 in game one then falling 6-4 in game two.

On the mound in game one for the Lions (19-14, 10-6 AMCC), Phil Myers (DuBois, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) registered his fifth win of the season after holding the Panthers (14-11, 8-5 AMCC) scoreless the entire match. In his seven innings of work, he allowed only four hits and four walks while also striking out three batters.

After Ryan Hamm (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) was hit by a pitch on the first at-bat of the game, Mason McGuire (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) stepped up and smacked his first homerun of the season to give Behrend a 2-0 lead after the first two batters.

The Lions got back on the board in the third inning. McGuire and Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) both got on base after being beaned by a pitch to set up David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-La Salle). Boehme hit a single through the right side to post his 47th RBI on the year.

In the sixth, singles from Zach Murray (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin), Hamm, McGuire, and Sada extended the lead to 7-0 in favor of the Lions, picking a victory in game one.

McGuire ended the game batting 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Sada went 1-for-2 while Hamm hit 1-for-3, both tallying two RBIs.

On the other hand, game two did not go the same way for Behrend.

A solo homerun from Justin Foreman (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette) in the second, followed by a run in the fourth inning to put the Lions up 2-1 through four. However, the Panthers would notch two in the bottom of the fifth and seventh to secure a 5-2 advantage.

Behrend tried battling back late in the game. A lead-off walk put McGuire on first, then Sada laced a tripled to right field to cut the lead to 5-3.

Pitt-Bradford added a run in the bottom of the eighth as well though, ending the Lions hope of a comeback.

McGuire added one more RBI in the ninth, but it was too late, making the final score 6-4.

Sada went 3-for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Foreman and McGuire both batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Senior pitcher Alex Hajduk (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) picked up his first loss of the season. He threw for 6.2 innings, striking out six while allowing six hits and three runs, all of which were unearned.

Behrend is back on their home diamond tomorrow for another AMCC double header. They will face-off against Mt. Aloysius at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
