Women's Track and Field Wins Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's track and field team won the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions tallied 181 points, edging out Westminster who placed second with 166 total points.

Behrend had five individual winners and won the 4x400m relay.  Catie Bertges (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) won the 3000m with a time of 10:41.80.  Katie Spade (Warren, PA/Warren) was another individual winner in the 800m.  Spade crossed the finish line at 2:21.72.  Bertges also competed in the 800m, coming in third at 5:04.65.  Haley Hughes (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) took first in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:42.94.  Hughes' time also qualified her for ECAC's.  Danielle Stanko (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) was close behind Hughes in second place at 12:24.34.

April McDermott (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) and Stephanie Stoughton (Chicora, PA/Karns City) were both winners in the field.  McDermott won the hammer throw at 36.76m with Stoughton winning the javelin after hitting 34.41m.  McDermott competed in the javelin throw as well, placing third at 30.75m. Both McDermoot and Stoughton were in the top-5 in the discus.  McDermott took second at 34.49m while Stoughton hit 32.93m for fifth.  Maranda Tano (Butler, PA/Knoch) took third in the hammer throw with a distance of 31.13m.

The 4x400m relay team of Spade, Alex Paget-Blanc (Paris, France/Aelene Boucher), Victoria Harwood (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) and Jamie Szramowski (Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) took home another first place for the Lions with a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 4:04.03.

Harwood participated in three other events as well.  She took second in both the 200m and 400m with times of 26.43 and 59.28, respectively.  Both times were good enough for ECAC's and Harwood's 400m time set a new school record.  She also placed third in the pole vault at 3.23m. 

Angela Sweeney (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) placed in the top-5 in two events.  The senior took fifth in both the pole vault and 100m hurdles.  She vaulted 2.93m and ran the 100m hurdles in 17.22.  Paget-Blanc placed fourth in both hurdling events.  She ran the 100m hurdles in 15.93m to qualify for ECAC's and finished the 400m hurdles in 1:10.39.

In the 100m, Jen Gibson (Hookstown, PA/South Side) crossed the line at 13.66 for fifth place.  Two Behrend athletes competed in the 800m.  Spade and Szramowski came in second and fourth with times of 2:21.72 and 2:29.20, respectively.

Georgia Kennedy (Eighty Four, PA/Ringgold) had a great day in the field for the Lions.  She took third in the shot put at 10.18m and fourth in the high jump at 1.43m.  Tano was just behind Kennedy in the shot put at 9.92m.

Behrend will be back in action on Saturday at the Westminster Invitational.
