Men's Volleyball Sweeps Hilbert

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's volleyball team defeated Hilbert 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-19) in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Tuesday night.

The win marked the fifth time the Lions (7-8, 5-1 AMCC) have swept the Hawks (0-15, 0-4 AMCC) since the all-time series began in 2012. Behrend also defeated Hilbert earlier this season, 3-1.

Josh Oertly (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) led all players with 10 kills, while adding four digs and three blocks. Mitch Farabaugh (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) recorded 19 assists and Joe Price (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) posted nine digs, three assists.

The Lions held the Hawks to single-digit kills in the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead in the match. In the first game, Oertly and Trenton Munk (Baden, PA/Ambridge) each had four kills to help Behrend pull away early and stay there for a 25-15 win.

Hilbert took its first lead of the match in the second set at 18-17 off an attack error by the Lions. The Hawks used an ace and another error to go ahead 20-18. Behrend won the next seven of 10 points, relying on two errors by Hilbert to secure the second game, 25-23.

Eric Theiss (Plum, PA/Plum) got four of his nine kills in the third set, including the kill that put the Lions up for good at 14-13. Oertly also had four kills, getting three after the Hawks timeout at 17-13 to turn it into a 23-17 lead. Aaron Mueller (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) tallied an ace and then won on a service error by Hilbert for the victory, 25-19.

Ryan Robida (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) added 12 assists, while Munk ended with eight kills and seven blocks. Ty Sheehan (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) was solid with seven kills, four digs, four blocks and one ace.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Bard for a tri-match, beginning at 10 a.m.
