Oberlander Nets Game Winner Over Mt. Union

ERIE, Pa. – Jordan Oberlander (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in overtime to lead the Penn State Behrend women's soccer team past Mt. Union 3-2 in non-conference action on Wednesday night.

The Lions (4-2) battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the first half to hand the Purple Raiders (4-1) their first loss of the season. Olivia Belack (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair) added the other goal for Behrend, while Rachel Weyand (Butler, PA/Butler) and Laura Schaefer (Erie, PA/General McLane).

In the first overtime game of the season, Oberlander gathered that deflected off the defenders head and back towards the Mt. Union goal. The senior forward buried her shot past Paige Freel on a breakaway to seal the victory.

Nicole Lanese continues to lead the Purple Raiders in scoring, knotting her seventh and eighth goal of the early season. The junior gave Mt. Union a 2-0 lead in the first 27 minutes of the contest.

Oberlander was able to cut the lead to 2-1 with just over five minutes left in the first half. Weyand took the throw in sent to Oberlander, who floated a shot into the upper right corner.

The 13-2 corner kick advantage by the Lions indicates the play was in the Behrend offensive end for a good portion of the game. Belack tried to make the most of the corner-kick opportunities with a header off the post and then eventually scoring the game-tying goal in the 88th minute to force overtime.

Behrend outshot Mt. Union 4-1 in overtime, starting with a shot by Nicole Evans (South Park, PA/South Park) that forced Freel to make a diving save followed by Belack who hit the post again.

Oberlander then tallied her first game winner of the season with 1:07 showing on the clock in overtime.

Ania Gorski (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) recorded seven saves for her fourth win of the season in goal.

The Lions return to action on Saturday at W&J. Game begins at 2 p.m.
