Women’s Track and Field Takes Third at Kenyon Classic

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Penn State Behrend women's track and field team competed at the Kenyon Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions took third place as a team with a score of 94, just 11.50 points away from first place.

Behrend was led by Catie Bertges (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) and Katie Spade (Warren, PA/Warren).  Bertges won the 3000m run with a time of 10:52.69 while Spade took first in the one mile run at 5:21.96.

Four other athletes competed in the 3000m run with Bertges and placed in the top-10.  Haley Hughes (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) took second at 11:02.40.  Danielle Stanko (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown), who also took third in the 5000m at 19:48.66, placed third again with a time of 11:21.40.  Katie Patterson (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) was in eighth place at 11:41.60 and Katie Manno (Erie, PA/McDowell) took 10th at 11:49.41.

Senior Victoria Harwood (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) had an excellent day at the meet as well.  Harwood set a new school record in the pole vault after placing second at 3.50m.  She also set a school record in the 400m run with another second place finish at 1:00.90.

Angela Sweeney (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) and Nicole Teribery (Bradford, PA/Bradford) competed in the pole vault alongside Harwood.  Sweeney took fifth at 3.05m with Teribery vaulting 2.90m for sixth.

Alex Paget-Blanc (Paris, France/Aelene Boucher) and Jen Gibson (Hookstown, PA/South Side) participated in the 400m with Harwood.  The duo placed third and sixth, respectively.  Paget-Blanc finished with a time of 1:02.54 and Gibson crossed the line at 1:05.29. Paget-Blanc also competed in the 200m and took fourth at 27.81.

In the 800m run, Spade had another outstanding finish.  The junior took second at 2:26.79.  Jamie Szramowski (Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) and Bertges ran in the 800m too.  Szramowski took fourth at 2:30.09 and Bertges placed ninth with a time of 2:35.42.

Turning back to the field, two athletes placed in the top-10 in the shot put and the high jump.  Maranda Tano (Butler, PA/Butler) took seventh in the shot put with a distance of 9.72m.  Katie Boehmer (McDonald, PA/South Fayette) placed ninth in the high jump at 1.32m.

On Friday night at the RIT Orange/Brown Invitational, Szramowski, Spade, Harwood, and Paget-Blanc qualified for ECAC's in the 4x400m relay.  The squad finished with a time of 4:08.18 to set a new school record.

Behrend will be back in action on March 1st at the ECAC Indoor Championships.
