Women’s Track and Field Competes at JCU Twilight Meet

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Penn State Behrend women's track and field team competed at the John Carroll Twilight Meet on Friday evening.

Two athletes set new school records and had performances good enough for ECAC's.

Victoria Harwood (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) and April McDermott (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) led the way with solid outings in the 400m and discus throw, respectively.  Harwood won the 400m with a time of 59.17 to set a new school record and qualify for the ECAC outdoor championships.  McDermott's performance in the discus throw earned her the same recognition.  McDermott placed second at 38.81m and like Harwood, set a new program record while qualifying for ECAC's.

Harwood also competed in the 200m and the pole vault.  In the 200m, she placed second with a time of 26.92.  Harwood also tied teammate Angela Sweeney (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) for first place in the pole vault at 2.75m.  Katie Spade ran in the 200m with Harwood, coming in fifth place at 28.35.  Spade contended in the 800m as well, finishing in second place at 2:21.89.

In the 3000m steeplechase, Haley Hughes (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) continued her dominance.  The junior won the event after crossing the finish line at 12:07.66.

Rounding out the top Behrend performers was Stephanie Stoughton (Chicora, PA/Karns City).  Stoughton placed second in the javelin throw at 29.65m.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday to host the Behrend Invitational at the newly constructed track and field complex.
