Women’s Track and Field Competes at Westminster Invite

NEW WILMINTON, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's track and field team took third place at the Westminster Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions have now competed in four meets with team scoring and have placed in the top-3 every time.

Katie Spade (Warren, PA/Warren) and Victoria Harwood (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) led the way with two individual wins each.  Spade won both the 1500m and the 800m with times of 4:50.27 and 2:20.95, respectively.  Harwood was an individual winner and an ECAC qualifier in the pole vault at 3.36m.  She also took first in the 200m with a time of 26.74.  Harwood qualified for ECAC's in the 400m as well, taking second place at 59.86.

Both Spade and Harwood teamed up with Jamie Szramowski (Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) and Alex Paget-Blanc (Paris, France/Aelene Boucher) for the 4x400m relay.  The squad won the event with a time of 4:07.41 and also qualified for ECAC's.

Behrend had two more athletes qualify for ECAC's in Haley Hughes (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) and Catie Bertges (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy).  Hughes won the 3000m steeplechase at 11:46.54 with Bertges winning the 10000m at 37:28.84.  Along with her ECAC qualifying time, Bertges set a new school record and now ranks in the top-20 in the country in the event.  Hughes competed in the 5000m, finishing in second place after crossing the line at 18:53.90.

Paget-Blanc continued her excellent season in the hurdling events.  She took fourth in both the 100m and the 400m.  Paget-Blanc finished in 16.56 in the 100m and 1:10.88 in the 400m.

Nicole Teribery (Bradford, PA/Bradford) and Angela Sweeney (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) contended in the pole vault alongside Harwood.  The duo each vaulted 3.06m with Teribery placing third and Sweeney coming in fifth.

Rounding out the top performers for the Lions was April McDermott (Atco, NJ/Hammonton).  McDermott took fourth in the discus throw with a distance of 35.56m.

Behrend will be back in action on Tuesday for the Allegheny Tri-Meet.
