Lions Fall to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team came up short to Mercyhurst in the final regular season game, falling 15-7 on Thursday evening.

The Lakers (6-6) got things going early in the second meeting of the year against the Lions (6-10), scoring eight of the first nine goals.

After Mercyhurst tallied five goals in the first 3:56 of the game, Daniella Rio-Martinez (Guaynabo, Puerto/Sagrados Corazones) got Behrend on the board with 2:33 remaining in the period. The Lakers ended the first quarter on a 3-0 run to push the lead to 8-1.

Similar to the first quarter, the Lakers started early by registering a goal in the opening 37 seconds. Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) was able to notch a goal to end the Lakers scoring streak at four goals, making the score 9-2. Angela Laier (Lansing, MI/Holt) notched a goal in the period, while Mercyhurst tallied two more to extend the lead to 11-3 at the break.

The second half was evenly played between both teams. Each team was also to record two goals in each period to end the game at 15-7.

Devon Van Rensburg (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford) paced the way for the Lions, scoring three goals while making five steals. Remy De Guzman (Mission Viejo/Trabuco Hills) also recorded three steals in the tough loss.

Holly Rae Hanson (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) posted six saves and two steals in the game. Jenessa Islas-Parker (Palatine, IL/Frema) and Rio-Martinez each dished out two assists.

After a two and a half week break, the Lions will be back in action when the host the CWPA Division III Championships on April 14-15. Game times are TBA.
