Women’s Water Polo Announces Team Awards

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State women's water polo team announced their team award winners for the 2017-18 season, which are voted on by the members of the team. The Lions finished with a program-best eight wins, while also tabbing fifth-place at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship Tournament.

In addition to being selected to the CWPA Second-Team All-Conference, senior Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) was named Most Valuable Player of the team this season. Wood played in every game this year for the Lions, putting together her best season in a Behrend uniform. She led the offensive power for the squad, burying a team-high 35 goals while dishing out 22 assists. Wood also tallied 24 steals, 15 drawn kickouts, and three field blocks.

The Sportsmanship/Leadership award went to senior utility player Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village). On the season, she garnered both All-Conference Second Team as well as CWPA Second-Team All-Tournament. Horn set a new Penn State Behrend school record for the most goals in her career, notching a final mark 156 goals. In addition, she recorded the third-most steals on the team with 38, while also handing of 17 assists and 13 drawn exclusions.

Freshman Devon Van Rensburg (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford) picked up the Rookie of the Year award. In her first season as a Lion, she was selected to the CWPA Second-Team All-Tournament for her play in the championships. Rensburg posted a team-high 44 steals, 33 goals, 26 drawn kickouts, 11 assists, while adding four penalty shots.

Freshman driver Carson Hagood (Orlando, FL/Bishop Moore Catholic) received Most Improved Player. Hagood tallied 10 steals, scored seven goals, and dished out four assists. She also logged two field blocks and a drawn kickout.
