Spalding Completes Weekend Sweep Over Lions

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team fell to Spalding 7-3 Sunday afternoon to close out a three-game set.

After the Lions (0-3) scored the first three runs of the game, the Golden Eagles (5-1) responded with seven unanswered runs to close out the weekend sweep.

Sophomore third baseman Justin Foreman (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette) got things going for Behrend in the second inning with a solo shot. He finished the day going 1-for-4 at the plate.

The Lions added two more runs in the third to jump out to the early 3-0 lead. Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) sparked a two out rally with a single to right field. He then put himself in scoring position after stealing second and advancing to third on an errant throw by the Spalding catcher. Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) drove Sada in with a hit of his own down the right field line.

That brought David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-La Salle) to the dish. The junior first baseman drove a double into right field, advancing Bohman to third. Bohman then scored on a wild pitch by Golden Eagle's pitcher Cole Slamsko.

After adding a run in the sixth, Spalding put together a two out rally of their own in the seventh, plating three to take a 5-3 lead. The next inning, they strung a pair of hits together to plate two more, giving them a four-run lead.

Mason McGuire (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) was the only Behrend player with a multiple-hit day. He finished going 2-for-3 with a double.

Next stop for the Lions is Spring Training in Fort Pierce, FL next week. Behrend will open on Sunday, March 5 in a doubleheader with Misericordia beginning at 10 a.m.
