Behrend Moves Into First Place at Blue Devil Invite

FREDONIA, NY – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team moved into first place and broke seven more records on the second day of the Fredonia State Blue Devil Invite on Saturday.

Clay Altemose set the school record in the 200 butterfly and 100 backstroke, while Brendan Lacey broke the program record in the 500 free. Altemose's time of 1:57.72 in the butterfly and 53.42 time in the backstroke were also pool records.  He took three seconds off his preliminary time in the butterfly to take first place. Altemose garnered his second first-place finish in the backstroke while setting the record.

Lacey swam 4:47.53 in the 500 free to replace teammate Dane Dombrosky's time of 4:50.88 set last season.  He almost broke the record in the preliminaries with a time of 4:50.98. Lacey edged Eric Fisher of Denison for the top spot in the event.

The first-place finishes continued for the Lions. Josh Weaver touched in 49.06, just one tenths of a second faster than his prelim time to win the 100 freestyle.

The 200 free relay and 400 medley relay teams shattered pool records. Lacey, Altemose, Steve Toore and Weaver took first place and set the record with a time of 1:27.58 in the 200 free relay.  Ben Strunk replaced Lacey from the 200 free relay to make up the 400 medley relay that also got a pool record and first place in 3:36.88.

Hunter Backenstose also earned points in the 100 backstroke along with Altemose, taking fourth with a time of 57.42.

Leading the way for Behrend in the 100 breaststroke were Strunk and Jake Sherk. Strunk came in fourth (1:01.77) and Jake Sherk clocked in a time of 1:02.16.

Lucas Kachurick collected 13 points for the team with a score of 373.10 for sixth place in the one-meter diving.

The Lions hold almost a 100 point lead over second-place team Denison.

Behrend competes in the third and final day of the Blue Devil Invite tomorrow. Events begin at 10 a.m.
