Behrend Captures Fifth AMCC Championship

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team won an unprecedented fifth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship on Saturday night.  The Lions won with a score of 356, almost 200 points more than second-place Pitt-Bradford with 172.5.

Among the PAC teams, Behrend took third place and beat regional-rival Washington & Jefferson by 45 points.

The Lions wouldn't be able to call it a day without breaking more records. In the first event of the night, Brian Mong placed fourth in the 1650 free with an AMCC meet-record and team-record time of 17:10.67.

Lucas Kachurick was the champion in the one-meter diving competition to sweep the diving events.  He posted an AMCC-record score of 452.25 for the gold medal and first place out of six divers.

Adding to the previous two days, Clay Altemose broke the conference record and reset his own team record in the 200 fly in 1:57.59 for fifth place overall. Dane Dombrosky took ninth in the 200 fly (2:05.85).

In the 200 backstroke, Hunter Backenstose was able to set the AMCC record in the preliminaries in 2:01.61 and then swam a 2:03.05 in the finals for seventh place.

The 400 free relay became the third relay of the weekend to set both the conference and program record. Backenstose, followed by Josh Weaver, Brendan Lacey and Steve Torre was the order of the record-breaking relay in 3:10.61. The foursome took 11 seconds off their preliminary time.

The top swimmers in the 100 free were Lacey in sixth (48.40) and Weaver in eighth place (48.94), both were the best times in the conference.

Jake Sherk led in the 200 breaststroke with a sixth-place finish in 2:15.53 and Ben Strunk came in ninth with a time of 2:15.66.
