Altemose Helps Lions Over Mt. Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio  – Clay Altemose was a triple individual winner to lead Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team past Mt. Union 151.5-132.5 in non-conference action on Saturday.

Diver Lucas Kachurick qualified for nationals in the 1m competition for 11 dives with a score of 426.85 to help the Lions post their fourth straight dual-meet victory and second in two days.

Altemose started out in the relay with a split of 25.50 along with Ben Strunk, Steve Torre and Josh Weaver for a second-place time of 1:41.89. Weaver had the best split time of 22.47 as the anchor.

Altemose tallied his first win in the 100 back (57.01) and then went 100 yards more for the victory in the 200 back (2:04.27). The third win came in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.00 to edge Mt. Union's Mike Zappa, who touched in 54.84.

Dane Dombrosky, Torre and Jake Sherk also led Behrend with wins in the 200 butterfly, 400 IM, and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Dombrosky hit the wall in 2:07.36 to take the 200 butterfly, while Torre was second in 2:07.97.  Torre also won the 400 IM in 4:34.47 with plenty of time to spare from second-place teammate Eric Peirce (4:41.12).

Sherk went 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke with Strunk and then the same duo went 2-3 in the 100 breaststroke. In the 200, Sherk recorded a winning time of 2:26.57 and Strunk touched in 2:27.97. The 100 breaststroke times were even closer with Sherk hitting in 1:05.81 and Strunk in 1:05.84, just three hundredths of a second separating the two.

Brian Mong and Brendan Lacey swam well with a few second-place finishes. Mong went the distance in the 1650 free with a time of 17:41.49, while Lacey was second in the shorter freestyle races with times of 1:48.85 in the 200 free and 4:56.29 in the 500 free.

In the 50 free, Andrew Opalewski was .16 seconds shy of first place with a time of 22.74. The same goes for Josh Weaver in the 100 free, touching in at 49.99 just .19 seconds shy of the winner Mike Greisl of the purple raiders.

The Lions return to action on Saturday against Edinboro. Meet time is 1 p.m.
