Westminster Defeats Men's Swimming and Diving

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Brendan Lacey was a triple winner for the Behrend men's swimming and diving team in a non-conference loss to Westminster, 163-125, on Saturday afternoon.

Lacey won both the 200 and 500 free, while being the lead-off swimmer in the winning 400 free relay. He touched in 1:48.67 in the 200 and 4:55.01 in the 500 event. The foursome of Lacey, Steve Torre, Josh Weaver and Hunter Backenstose collectively posted a time of 3:21.93 for first place.

Torre and Lucas Kachurick were the only other individual winners on the day. Torre won the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.57, while Kachurick won both the 1m and 3m diving events (245.45/269.40). Kachurick's score in the 3m diving set a new Westminster pool record.

The Lions recorded eight second-place finishes, getting two from Clay Altemose. He was runner-up in the 100 backstroke (54.80) and the 200 backstroke (2:00.39). Brian Mong came in second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:20.93 in the earlier events.

Jake Sherk took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.39) and then went on to place third in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.59).  Andrew Opalewski and Weaver came close to winning the 50 and 200 free, respectively. Opalewski touched in 23.23 and Weaver claimed second in 49.85.

Dane Dombrowsky tallied second in the 200 butterfly (2:14.55).

The Lions take a month off in between semesters and return to action on Jan. 16 at Penn State Altoona.
