Men's Swimming and Diving Captures Blue Devil invite

FREDONIA, NY – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team took five first-place finishes and broke two more pool records to stay on top to win the Fredonia State Blue Devil Invite on Sunday.

The Lions posted 767.5 points to beat out second-place Denison, who tallied 607 points. Fredonia came in third with a score of 582.

Both relay teams broke the pool records en route to the victory. Clay Altemose, Ben Strunk, Dane Dombrosky and Hunter Backentose won the 200 medley relay in a record time of 1:38.52. Backentose was also a part of the 400 free relay along with Brendan Lacey, Steve Torre and Josh Weaver for a pool record of 3:12.91.

Torre, Altemose and Lacey each won individual events. Torre captured the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.30 after touching in 2:04.24 in the preliminaries.

The 100 butterfly belonged to Altemose with a time of 52.36, while Dombrosky took fifth in 55.23. Lacey led a 1-5-8 finish in the 200 free. He took first in 1:45.11 meanwhile Backenstose was fifth (1:50.31) and Weaver in eighth (1:54.20).

Eric Pierce was the top finisher for Behrend in the 200 backstroke. He came in sixth with a time of 2:09.14 and Backenstose was seventh (2:12.11). In the 200 breaststroke, Strunk and Jake Sherk finished in the Top 10. Strunk was fourth (2:17.25) and Sherk was next in line with 2:17.48.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Westminster. Meet time is 1 p.m.
