Lions Score Late to Pick Up First Win of Season

FORT PIERCE, Fl. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team pickup up their first win of the season Monday, 2-1, against Immaculata.

Phil Myers (DuBois, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) threw 7 1/3 strong innings for the Lions (1-5), giving up just one run on six hits while striking out three.

The Macs (1-1) jumped out to the an early 1-0  lead, scoring their first and only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Immaculata's Jason McCormick reached first after being hit by a pitch to start the game. He then advanced to third on a double from their next batter. McCormick then scored two batters later on a ground ball to second.

Behrend battled for the next four innings and finally got something to show for it in the fifth. Eric Bellisario (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) led off the inning with a single. John Brittner (Zelienople, PA/Seneca Valley) was brought in to pinch run and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ian Taylor (Wexford, PA/Vincentian Academy). Justin Foreman (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette) then singled to bring Brittner to third. Brittner then scored on a ground out to the shortshot by Zach Murray (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin).

The Lions game-winning run then came in the eighth. Mason McGuire (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair got things going by drawing a one-out walk. He then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then made his way home, making in a 2-1 ballgame, on an error by the Macs shortstop.

Eric Mikulan (Pittsburgh, PA/Hampton) entered the game in the eighth to replace Myers. The sophomore righty prevented Immaculata from scoring in the eighth and then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to earn the save.

Behrend will face Widener tomorrow at 10 a.m.
