WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team was on the road Saturday afternoon, beating Waynesburg 7-6 in game one then falling 15-6 in game two.
In game one, the Lions (11-9) got things going in the top of the second, scoring five runs to take the early lead. Ryan Hamm (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) singled to right field and then came around to score after Behrend drew three stright walks.
Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) then drove in Foreman after reaching base on a fielder's choice. Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) came through with a two-out double to left field to bring in two more runs, making the score 4-0. Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) capped off the inning with a single through the left side, scoring Bergstrom.
Waynesburg responded in a big way, scoring five of their own to tie the game in the bottom half of the second.
The Lions took the lead again in the sixth after Foreman hammered a two-run homer to left field, making the game 7-5.
The Jackets threated in the bottom of the seventh. They strung together two hits to start the inning, scoring one run. Brandon Smail (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) then forced a fly out and struck out two Waynesburg batters to end the game and pick up his first save of the season.
Hamm finished game one with three hits and two runs scored. Jack Herzing (St. Mary's, PA/Elk County Catholic) recorded his third win on the year after striking out 10 and surrendering just three hits in six innings of work.
The Lions jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game two with back-to-back homers from Sada and Bohman in the top of the first. Waynesburg answered the next half inning by adding one of their own, making the score 2-1.
The Jacket put together huge third and fourth innings, platting seven and three runs, respectively, to pull ahead 11-2. Behrend answered with four runs in the fourth, but the game was out of reach.
Waynesburg put together a four-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead 15-6.
Bohman added three hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs in the game while Sada finished 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
The Lions will be back on the diamond tomorrow for a 1 p.m. game against Muskingum.
