La Roche Defeats Lions in AMCC Championship Game

MCCANDLESS, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team fell short in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship game Sunday morning, losing to La Roche 6-4.

The Lions (25-19) faced a 5-0 deficit heading in to the sixth inning, but were able to cut the Redhawk's (34-8) lead to just two.

Brian Bohamn (Erie, PA/McDowell) came around to score the first run for Behrend after getting things started with a one-out single.With two outs, David Boehme (Venentia, PA/Seton-La Salle) singled to move Bohman to second. Mason McGuire (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) came through with an RBI single to plate Bohman. Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) followed by ripping a double to score Boehme and McGuire, making the score 5-3.

In the top of the eighth, McGuire added another RBI, hitting a sac fly that brought in Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown), cutting the La Roche lead to one.

However, the Redhawks added one more run in the bottom of the eighth to jump back ahead by two, making the score 6-4 with just three more outs for the Lions to work with.

Behrend threatened in the top half of the ninth, having first and third with two outs, but were unable to complete the comeback.

The Lions combined for ten hits in the game with Sada, McGuire, and Zach Murray (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) each adding two.

Alex Hajduk (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) threw 7.2 innings for Behrend, his longest outing of the year.

Senior Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin), and sophomores Ryan Hamm (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), and Sada were named to the 2017 All-Tournament team.

Sada finsihed the weekend going 7-for-13 (.538) includin two doubles and a home run. He added four runs scored and four RBI.

Hamm added six hits and batted .462 in four games. He scored two runs and added two RBI.

In the 5-3 win over Mt. Aloysius Friday, Rohrer tossed a complete game five-hitter while striking out eight batters.
