Behrend Splits With Medaille

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team split with Medaille Wednesday afternoon in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action. The Lions dropped the first game 4-3 before rebounding to a 5-2 victory in game two.

Peter Grunzweig picked up his first win of the season after tossing a complete game five-hitter against the Lions (11-9, 5-1), striking out three.

The Mavericks (7-12, 3-1) rallied for a three-run inning in the top of the second to break the game open. They strung four hits together, including two doubles in a row to take the early 3-0 lead.

Behrend tied the game up at three-all after plating three unearned two-out runs. Zach Murray (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on an error by the Medaille catcher. He then came in to score after a miscue by the third baseman, which extended the inning. Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) came up with a two-out double that brought in two more runs.

The differencemaker came in the sixth after Medaille managed to scrape together one more run, putting them up 4-3.

Murray finished the game going 2-for-3.

Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) shut down the Mavericks offense in the nightcap. The senior righty pitched a complete game to pick up his third win of the season while striking out 12 and allowing just four hits.

The Lions and Medaille were tied at 1-all after two innings of play. David Boehme's (Venetia, PA/Seton-La Salle) single to center scored Justin Foreman (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette), who had reach bas with a single to left field earlier in the inning.

Behrend added three more the following inning, including the game-winning run when Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) came in to score. Sada's single to left got the scoring going and then Bohman came through with a sacrifice fly to score Bergstrom and advance Sada to second. Sada trotted in to make the score 4-2 after an error on the catcher.

Murray singled to center in the bottom of the sixth to finish off the scoring for the day.

Behrend will looked to add to the winning column on Saturday when they travel to Waynesburg for doubleheader non-conference action beginning at 1 p.m.
