Behrend Takes Two at Mt. Aloysius

CRESSON, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team picked up their first road victories of the season Sunday afternoon, sweeping Mt. Aloysius in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action, 10-0 and 15-6.

The Lions (10-8, 4-0 AMCC) exploded for 28 hits over the course of the day while holding the Mounties (4-17, 0-4 AMCC) to just 10 over in the two games.

Jack Herzing (St. Mary's, PA/Elk County Catholic) threw a gem on the mound in game one. The junior pitched a complete game four-hitter while striking out 11.

The Lions struck early in game one. Mason McGure (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) came through with a two out bases-clearing triple to make it a 3-0 ballgame in the top of the first.

Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) helped the Lions extend their lead in the fourth. Bergstrom singeld to bring in Zach Murray (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) and Ian Taylor (Wexford, PA/Vincentian Academy), who had both reached with singles of their own. Bohman's single later in the inning scored Bergstrom.

Behrend added two more runs the following inning and then one more in the sixth and seventh innings to close out the game.

Bergstrom and McGuire each tallied three hits in the game and combined for seven RBIs.

In game two, the Lions tallied eight runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach. After striking for the first five runs of the game, Mt. Aloysius scored three straight over the course of the third and fourth innings to cut the Behrend lead to two.

Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) gave the Lions an 8-3 lead in the top of the seventh with a two run blast. Behrend then strung seven hits together in the eighth to break the game wide open. David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-La Salle) got the inning started with a double. Murray then singled to score Boehme. Jacob Campbell (Bulter, PA/Butler) came through with a pinch-hit double to score Murray and then came around to score when Bergstrom doubled.

Later in the inning, Justin Foreman (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette) doubled to clear the bases, making it a 14-3 game. Campbell came back to plate and singled to bring in two more runs.

Foreman finished the game with a team-leading four RBIs after going 2-for-4 from the plate and scoring two runs. 

Eric Mikulan (Pittsburgh, PA/Hampton) got the win after going 6.0 innings and giving up just four hits while striking out three.

Behrend will be back at home this Tuesday when they take on Medaille in doubleheader action beginning at 1 p.m.
