Behrend Track & Field Ready for United East Outdoor Championships

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend men's and women's track & field team will host the United East Outdoor Championships on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. The meet will begin at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday at the Behrend track.

The 10 institutions representing the United East Conference are as follows: Cedar Crest, Gallaudet, Keystone, Lancaster Bible, Notre Dame of Maryland, Penn State Abington, Penn State Harrisburg, Rosemont, Saint Elizabeth, and St. Mary's College of Maryland, while the four institutions representing the AMCC are Alfred State, Carlow, Hilbert, and Penn State Behrend. The top three finishers in each event and the top three relay teams will earn All-United East honors. At the conclusion of the meet, a United East Men's and Women's Team Champion will be announced. Also, a Men's and Women's Track Athlete, Field Athlete, Rookie, and Coach of the Year will be crowned.

Behrend has competed in six meets prior to the United East Outdoor Championships

Women

* Madison Kappeler (Cecil, PA/Canon-McMillan) kicked off the outdoor season on Friday, March 29 with an AARTFC qualifying clearance of 11-3 for fourth place in the pole vault at the Carnegie Mellon Invite, while Julia Balaski (Mercer, PA/Mercer) was the runner-up in the javelin throw in her first meet of the season, finishing with an AARTFC mark of 122-8
* At the John Papa Invitational, Kappeler tied for first in the pole vault with a personal best 11-9 3/4. This height moved her into second in the Behrend record books, behind Haley Yenchik's 12-2 ¾ set during the 2018 season
* During this meet, Lindsey Hartle (Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) notched a 5000m personal record time of 19:21.60 for third place, while Haley Felton (Midway, PA/Fort Cherry) set a new personal record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.99 for seventh place
* This past weekend at Saint Francis, six Lions set personal bests
* Freshman Bridget McMaster (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo Central) won her 3000m steeplechase debut, running a time of 13:03.65

Men

* Senior thrower Dan Dabrowski (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) set a new school record in the discus with a throw of 170-2 at the John Papa Invitational. On his sixth throw of the day, Dabrowski notched his record-setting distance, surpassing his previous record of 167-9 set last season at Mount Union
* During this meet, Samuel Hetrick (New Bethlehem, PA/Redbank Valley) also delivered a first-place height of 6-6 in the high jump
* Dabrowski won in the discus at all six meets for the Lions, earning an AARTFC qualifying mark of 167-7 to start the outdoor season at Carnegie Mellon
* Hetrick was victorious at three meets in the high jump, scoring an AARTFC qualifying height of 6-4 ¾ at Westminster
* Junior Kody Klein (North East, PA/Cathedral Prep) ran an AARTFC qualifying time at Carnegie Mellon of 1:55.51 in the 800m en route to a fourth-place finish. Also, Matthew Laslavic (Evans City, PA/Seneca Valley) tallied a first-place throw of 178-6 in the javelin
* Aidan Domencic (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) was victorious at Westminster in the 3000m steeplechase, recording a time of 9:55.40, while Alex Cotton (Saxonburg, PA/Knoch) threw an AARTFC mark of 48-7 ¾ in the shot put
* On Saturday at Saint Francis, Ryan Festa (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) secured a win with a season-best height of 14-9 in the pole vault, while Antonio Faraone (New Castle, PA/Union) delivered a personal-best throw of 49-7 in the shot put
