Women's Swimming Shuts Down Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, Pa. – In an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) swimming match up, the Penn State Behrend Lions had no problem handling the Pitt-Bradford Panthers 108-58 on Friday night.

Behrend won the first three events and eventually eight out of 11 for the entire meet to collect the victory. Jamie Boyle (Sarver, PA/Freeport) was the lone individual for the Lions, capturing the 200 IM in 2:39.79 and then the 100 free in 1:04.95.

MaryEllen Spooner (Lockhaven, PA/West Springfield), Hilary MacManus (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk), Julie Cook (Warren, PA/Warren) and Anne Lawrence (State College, PA/State College) won the opening 400 medley relay in 4:29.47.

Jesse Dunleavy (McMurry, PA/Peters Township) helped Behrend in the distance events, winning the 1000 free in 11:56.96 before falling in the 500 free by one-hundredths of a second with a time of 5:50.33.

Sarah Jelinek (Warren, PA/Warren) was the top finisher on the night in the 200 free in 2:35.24, while Emily Merkle (Eighty Four, PA/Canon McMillan) had her season-best time for second place (2:37.09).

In addition to swimming a leg in the 400 medley relay, Lawrence, Spooner and Cook each tallied individual wins. Lawrence tallied a time of 2:26.36 to win the 200 butterfly, while Spooner won the 200 backstroke (2:24.76) and Cook was victorious in the 200 breaststroke (2:42.29).

MacManus earned a pair of second-place finishes, leading Behrend in the 50 free (26.58) and was behind Cook in the 200 breaststroke (2:50.67).

Emily Spicher (Falls Creek, PA/DuBois) was instrumental in the Lions win, placing second in the 200 backstroke (2:51.09) and third in the 50 free (30.44).

Behrend returns to action on tomorrow against Mt. Union. Meet time is 1 p.m.
