Women's Swimming & Diving Sets Tone at AMCC Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's swimming and diving team finished first in five out of six events for 96 points and first place at the 2012 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships on Thursday night.

The Lions, competing against five teams in the conference, was the top AMCC squad in all but one event to begin the three day meet with promise of a sixth straight championship.  

Behrend broke three records in the first event of the night. The 200 free relay team of MaryEllen Spooner (Lockhaven, PA/West Springfield), Hilary MacManus (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk), Julie Cook (Warren, PA/Warren) and Katie Siffrinn (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) swam in 1:41.13 to reset the AMCC open and meet record, along with the Lions team record.

Meghan Wade (Berea, OH/Berea) led Behrend in the one-meter diving finals. She took third overall and first in the AMCC with a score of 367.95 for 11 dives.

Anne Lawrence (State College, PA/State College) was the conference winner in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:16.64 to earn eighth overall. In addition to swimming two relays, MacManus was the top AMCC swimmer in the 50 free with a time of 25.39, good enough for 13th overall.

Spooner, Cook, Lawrence and MacManus joined forces to make up the 400 medley relay team that finished fifth overall and first in the AMCC with a time of 4:05.63 to collect the final points for the Lions on day one.  

Behrend returns to action on tomorrow for day two of the AMCC Championships. Preliminaries begin at  10 a.m.
