Women's Tennis Competes at Goucher Open

TOWSON, Md. – The Penn State Behrend women’s tennis team traveled to Towson, Maryland to compete in the Goucher College Open this weekend.

Stephanie Cattron placed third in the Flight II singles competition, defeating Jackie Brady of St. Mary’s 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals but then falling 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. Cattron won by default in the third-place match to finish with a 1-1 record.

Leslie Durante and Jenna Sellitto each took fourth in their respective flights. In the quarterfinals, Durante had no problems, winning 6-1 and 6-0. She lost in two tiebreaker sets in the semifinals 7-6 (7-4) and 7-6 (7-3). In her next match, Durante fell in another tiebreaker set 7-6 (7-4) and then 6-2 for fourth overall.  

In flight five singles, Sellitto followed in the footsteps of Durante and won her first match (6-4, 6-2) before falling in the semifinals. She also took her opponent to tiebreaker sets but dropped a 7-6 (7-2) and 7-6 (7-5) decision.

Megan Noschese joined Sellitto in the flight IV, playing to a fifth-place finish with a 2-1 record. After falling in her first match, she bounced back two win the next two and defeating Jannill Sites from Frostburg State 7-5, 6-7 (4-7) and 1-0 (11-9). 

Arica Christman, playing in the top singles flight, also posted a 2-1 record. She fell 6-3, 6-4 in the first match and then posted scores of 6-1, 6-1 in the next two for fifth place.

In doubles, Elissa Swartz and Megan Flinchbaugh were the champions of the second flight. In the quarterfinals, they won 6-3, 6-1 and then tallied a 6-3, 6-4 decision to advance to the championship match. A 7-5, 6-2 victory over Slone Portner and Kelsey Pyle from Richard Stockton sealed the first-place win.

The twosome of Allison Quigley and Jade Buhite placed third in the first flight in doubles competition. The pair won 6-2, 6-1, before falling in the semifinals 7-5, 6-2. In the match for third, Quigley and Buhiten battled to a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

The Lions return to action on Friday at Westminster. Match begins at 4 p.m.
