Women's Water Polo Falls Twice

ERIE, Pa.  – Freshman goalie Elizabeth Causgrove made 18 saves and MaryEllen Spooner scored five goals on the day, but the Penn State Behrend women's water polo team dropped a 14-1 decision to Carthage and fell 8-6 to Connecticut on Saturday in the Junker Pool.

Against Connecticut, the Lions (1-8) took a 1-0 lead with two minutes left in the first quarter thanks to Spooner's first goal from Anne Lawrence. Connecticut was able to net two quick goals to end the quarter ahead, 2-1.

The Camel's netted four goals in the second quarter to take a three-goal lead at 6-3. Spooner tied the game at 2-all with a steal in the defensive end and a goal at the 7:02 mark. Maia Taft put Connecticut ahead for good with a power-play goal at 4:27.

Spooner scored again to cut the lead to one with 2:03 remaining before halftime. The Camel's repeated their first-quarter performance ending with two more quick goals to jump ahead, 6-3.

Behrend outscored Connecticut 3-1 in the fourth quarter and got help from Causgrove to get within, 7-6.  The Lions got two goals in a minute thanks to Spooner and Lawrence. Causgrove made a save on a penalty shot and after Behrend came out of a timeout Spooner made it 7-6 with her final goal.

Kristin Lampley put away a penalty shot with 1:39 left to seal the win.

In game one,  Carthage grabbed a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back for the victory. Paula Rusca scored the lone goal for the Lions and Causgrove posted eight saves.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Utica at 1:30 p.m.
