Lions Split With Mount Aloysius

ERIE, Pa. – Ryan Kragnes went 3-for-7 with a double and a stolen base on the day as the Penn State Behrend baseball team won the back-end of a double header, 6-0 Sunday in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action against Mount Aloysius. The Lions (12-4, 5-1 AMCC) lost the opener, 4-2.

In game one action, the Mounties (6-7, 1-0 AMCC) tallied the first run of the game in the first inning off of a sacrifice fly by Mark Saxman which brought in Matt Cornetti.

Mount Aloysius would strike again in the fourth inning putting up three more runs, two of which were unearned.

Down 4-0, Behrend responded in the fourth inning with a few runs of their own. Ryan Geibel, Matt Bittner and Evan Bukowski each singled to set up bases loaded for Jeff Lang. A costly error by a Mount Aloysius' pitcher on a routine throw to first, allowed Geibel and Bittner to score on the play, 4-2.

Neither team was able to rack up any runs in the remaining three innings. The Lions would fall 4-2, despite having out hit the Mounties 7-3.

Ryan Zamiskie was credited with the loss after going 6.1 innings, allowing four runs (two earned), while striking out three opponents.

Top of the third inning of game two with no outs, James Verona crushed a solo home run over the left-field fence to give the Lions (12-4) a 1-0 lead. Verona's homer was followed by a Mounties (6-8) wild pitch that allowed Joe Paterniti to score from third. To end the run-heavy inning, Geoff Lang smacked a triple to right-center field that scored two more.

Closing the deficit was proven to be even more difficult when Behrend's Bukowski extended the lead to 6-0 with his RBI single in the sixth.

Ryan Jacobs picked up the win in the 6-0 shutout. Jacobs threw for all seven innings giving up 3 hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters.
