ROCHESTER, NY – A 14-run sixth inning gave the Penn State Behrend baseball team a 14-10 edge over non-conference opponent St. John Fisher, Monday.
The Lions (24-10), putting their six-game win streak on the line in a tune-up game before the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships, found themselves down 2-0 in the fifth inning.
In the Top of the sixth, the blue and white led by a couple of RBIs by Blake Pavlik and Matt Bittner and Geoff Lang, posted 14 runs on 12 hits. The inning came to a conclusion just before Behrend's lead-off batter saw his third plate appearance, 14-2.
The Cardinals (25-7) started a late run, recording eight runs over a two-inning stretch, and found themselves in a battle, behind 14-10 after eight.
The Lions pitching staff which faced 45 batters defended the four-run lead in the ninth to negate the comeback, en route to a 14-10 victory.
Seven different players saw at least one inning on the mound. Chad Zurat earned the win entering the game down 2-0 in the fifth inning, allowing zero runs and zero hits. Ryan Jacobs gave up the games first two scores, both unearned. The sophomore hurler struck out a team-high three batters.
Behrend will enter the AMCC championship series against La Roche, Thursday May 7 at 9 a.m.
