ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Championships and will travel to top-seeded Neumann University for the single-elimination tournament this weekend.
The Lions (27-12) received a first-round bye and will face the winner of No. 3 La Roche (23-14) and No. 6 Penn State Abington (19-18) on Sunday, May 22 at 12 p.m. In the other semifinal, No. 1 Neumann (28-12) will play the winner of fourth-seed Grove City (21-14) and fifth-seed Medaille (22-15). The two semifinal winners will compete for the championship beginning at 3 p.m.
Behrend is making its sixth appearance in the ECAC Tournament and is looking for its third championship trophy. The Lions won the title in 2002 and 2003, and is returning to the tournament for the first time since 2006. The previous three years, Behrend earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.
This season, the Lions secured the No. 3 seed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament and battled their way to the championship game before falling to Penn State Altoona, 8-7. Behrend has competed this season against three of the five remaining teams in the bracket, posting a combined 4-3 record against Neumann, La Roche and Medaille.
The Lions dropped their third game of the year to Neumann over spring break in Florida, while falling to La Roche twice during the regular season before getting revenge on the Redhawks in the AMCC Tournament. Behrend also defeated Medaille three times, including an 11-3 victory to stay alive in the conference playoffs.
