SCRANTON, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team opened up the season with a 3-0 win over Mt. St. Mary's and then dropped a 3-0 decision to the hosts of the Scranton Tournament held on Friday night.

The Lions (1-1) defeated Mt. St. Mary's 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 before falling to Scranton 25-23, 25-19 and 25-18. Rachel Frye (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) tallied eight kills in each match help Behrend split on the first day of the tournament. Hannah Saunders (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) handed out 28 assists and recorded 16 digs combined for both matches.

Against Mt. St. Mary's, the Lions had three players in double-digit digs including Meredith Sndyer (Parker, PA/Allegheny-Clarion Valley) who posted 11 digs, seven kills and four aces. Amanda Henry (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) added six kills and 11 digs, while Paige Scurpa (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) was the third player with 11 digs in the first match.

Against Scranton, both Julie Pace (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) and Snyder each posted a career high of 17 digs. Scurpa registered seven kills and nine digs, and Saunders tallied 15 assists, seven digs and two aces.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Wentworth and Bard on day two of the Scranton Tournament, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
