Women's Soccer Opens Season With Win Over Ithaca

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a come-from behind win over Ithaca, posting a 2-1 victory in the opening game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament on Friday night.

Jordan Oberlander (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBeouf) and Jordan Trama tallied the goals for the Lions (1-0), while Ania Gorski (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) posted her first collegiate win in between the pipes with seven saves.

This is the first win in program history over the Bombers (0-1). Behrend fell to Ithaca 3-0 in the NCAA Tournament in 2013.

Ithaca's (0-1) Sarah Pirnie took a one-touch shot off a cross from Sam Robinson in the 13th minute to get on the scoreboard first for a 1-0 lead.

The Lions answered back nearly six minutes later to make it 1-all. Ashlyn Whipple (Washington, PA/Canon McMillan) sent a ball from the back line up and over the Ithaca defense to find Oberlander's head at 18:36 mark.

Trama made her first collegiate goal the game winner in the 52nd minute. Off the first shot taken by Behrend in the second half, the freshman drilled a shot into the upper left corner thanks to a pass from Olivia Belack (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair).

The Bombers turned up the pressure in the second half, trying to keep the ball in the Lions offensive half. Mackenzie Hinchliffe sent a shot in with 6:19 left and Gorski smothered the ball on the ground to keep Ithaca off the board in the second half.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the HLM Tournament. Behrend will face Baldwin Wallace at 7:30 p.m.
