Lions Drop Two on First Day of CWPA Weekend

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Weekend.  The Lions fell to Connecticut College 21-3 in their opening match on Friday morning before being defeated by Utica, 12-5.

The Camels used an up-tempo offense to get past Behrend in the opening game of the weekend.  The high-power offense of Connecticut College helped the Camels start and close the game in grand fashion.  The Camels netted a combined 15 goals in the first and fourth quarters to earn their third victory of the season.

The Lions were able to add single goals in the first, third, and fourth, but it was not enough to catch Connecticut College.  MaryEllen Spooner (Springfield, VA/West Springfield), Hannah Kelly (Elizabeth, PA/South Allegheny), and Alex Isaacson (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport), scored the goals for Behrend.  Paula Rusca (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young), Mary Therese Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell), and Jackie Gowen (Harborcreek, PA/Harborcreek) each tallied one assist.  Elizabeth Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) made eight saves in net.

In their second game of the day, the Lions netted a season-high five goals with three coming in the fourth quarter.  A strong first quarter by Utica proved to be the difference as the Pioneers outscored Behrend 5-1.

The offense was led by Spooner who found the back of the net three times.  Isaacson scored another for the Lions with Mary Therese Causgrove netting one to go with two assists.  Elizabeth Causgrove made five saves in goal and recorded six steals.

Behrend will be back in the water tomorrow at 3 p.m. to host Macalester and 7 p.m. to take on Carthage.
