Women’s Water Polo Wraps Up Season at CWPA Championships

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team dropped three games at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championships on Friday.  The Lions fell to Connecticut College 18-4 in their opening match.  Behrend was then defeated by Macalester 13-4 before concluding the season with a 6-3 loss to Utica.

In their opening game of the day, the Camels jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and increased the advantage to 11-1 at halftime.  In the second half, the Lions put three goals on the board in the third quarter, but it was not enough to catch Connecticut College.

MaryEllen Spooner (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) led the offense with two goals and an assist.  Alex Isaacson (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) and Paula Rusca (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young) each chipped in one goal.  Elizabeth Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) made 10 saves in net and tallied a team-high seven steals.

Against Macalester, Behrend fell behind 7-0 after the first quarter.  Despite holding the Scots to just six goals over the final three quarters, the Lions only netted four were defeated in their second game.

Spooner netted three more goals with Mary Therese Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) contributing one.  Elizabeth Causgrove continued to play well between the pipes, stopping eight shots.

In the final match of the day, the Lions trailed only 3-1 at halftime against the Pioneers. Behrend would get two more goals while Utica matched its first-total for a three-goal victory. Spooner scored twice and drew five kickouts.  M. Causgrove also had a goal, and her sister E. Causgrove made six saves and six steals. Rusca registered two assists and took three shots.
