Behrend Wins Two at Cortland Classic

CORTLAND, NY - The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team picked up their first two victories of the season with a 3-0 win over Fredonia State and a 3-1 victory against Buffalo State on the second day of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic on Saturday.

The Lions (2-2) defeated Fredonia in three sets, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-21. Chelsea Magnusen (Plum, PA/Plum) dished out a career-best 31 assists to go with three aces in the win. Mary Sperry (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) and Jessica Woods (Corry, PA/Corry) each tallied nine kills. Stefanie Kelley added 26 digs.

Behrend lost the first set 26-24 to Buffalo State, but bounced back to win three straight sets  (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) for its second win of the day. Kelley, who finished the day with 67 digs, recorded a career-high 41 digs, while Kelly Treser (Pittsburgh, PA/Seneca Valley) led at the net with 12 kills.

Once again, Sperry and Woods posted nine kills each. Alyssa Pears (Meadville, PA/Meadville) contributed six kills.

For her effort this weekend, Sperry was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday with their home opener against Grove City. Match time is 7 p.m.
