Lions Split on Day One of Behrend Invitational

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team defeated Kenyon 3-0 and then fell to Hiram 3-0 on the first day of the Behrend Invitational held in the Junker Center on Friday.

On the day, Kelly Treser (Pittsburgh, PA/Seneca Valley) posted 18 kills, nine in each match and four blocks against Hiram. Chelsea Magnusen (Plum, PA/Plum) had a combined 48 assists, while Stefanie Kelley (Moon Township, PA/Moon) collected 31 digs.

In the first set against the Ladies, the Lions took a 2-0 lead with 25-22 and 25-21 victories. Down 17-11 in third set, Behrend went on an 11-4 run to take the lead at 22-21. From there, the game was tied seven ties and the Lions had seven match points, pulling off a 31-29 win.  Mary Sperry (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) added eight kills for Behrend.

The Terriers got the best of the Lions in three sets in the second match. Hiram claimed the first set 25-16 and the second 25-10. Behrend held the lead the entire third set, forcing the Terriers to take their first timeouts of the match. At 24-20, Hiram won six straight points to win the set, 26-24.

The Lions return to action tomorrow in the Behrend Invitational, facing St. Vincent at 10:30 a.m. and Marietta at 2:30 p.m.
