Lions Defeat Buffalo State Again

ERIE, Pa. – Mary Sperry (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) and Stefanie Kelley (Moon Township, PA/Moon) each recorded double-double, while Chelsea Magnusen (Plum, PA/Plum) tallied a season-best 39 assists to lead Behrend past Buffalo State 3-1 in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday night in the Junker Center.

Sperry led with 13 kills and 24 digs, and Kelley posted 10 kills and 15 digs to help the Lions (12-14) defeat the Bengals (12-16) for the second time this season. Behrend earned a 3-1 victory over Buffalo State on Sept. 3 at the Cortland Tournament.

The Lions dropped the first match 25-23 and then proceeded to win the next three sets 25-17, 25-5 and 25-18. In the first set, Behrend held a lead until the final three points. The Bengals were able to tie it up 23-all and then took advantage of two errors before Ray-Ray Algbedo knocked in a kill for a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, the Lions never trailed pulling out the eight-point win. Behrend took its largest lead at 20-11 when Buffalo State had an attack error. Kelley tallied two kills and one went to Magnusen for a 24-14 lead. The Lions won on a service error to tie the match at 1-all.

The Bengals had no chance in the third set, only scoring five points. The Lions forced eight errors and recorded three aces of their own to win 25-2 and go ahead 2-1 in the match.

With the fourth set tied at 11-all, Sperry made two straight kills and four attack errors by Buffalo State gave Behrend a 17-12 lead. Three more errors committed by the Bengals made it 20-13. Kelley, Magnusen and Catherine Healy (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) each recorded kills for the Lions for the

Jessica Woods (Corry, PA/Corry) had four solo blocks and two assists for six total and Katy Vicini (Rural Valley, PA/West Shamokin) tallied two aces.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Franciscan. Match begins at 1 p.m.
